Locked In Syndrome

The decision regarding what type of software platform you want to use as a tech infrastructure basis for your venture is one that will affect the future of your company. Essentially, once the decision is made, you will become locked in to that choice. As a result, its important to understand whether the platform you are choosing allows changes or modifications. Its likely that with custom software, it will be harder to allow changes or modifications that might be required as your venture evolves. Any venture may fall victim to a situation where it will have to choose between continuing on a current path with a project and vendor that may not be ideal, or starting over completely. This is a choice between the lesser of two evils, but the loss may be mitigated by an upfront decision regarding your pathway towards development.

Thumbs UpTry This: Be realistic that money might have to be wasted in regards to software development. Realistically, you might need to use two or three firms before your platform is fully constructed.

Thumbs DownAvoid This: Don’t quickly switch (or abandon) a development partner simply because you’re encountering roadblocks. Roadblocks are inevitable and the key will be to find ways to manage those effectively.
